✔ Simple shapes that are easy to cut
✔ Great practice for drilling axle holes
✔ Quick project that can be completed in an afternoon

Materials For A Wooden Toy Train

Most wooden toy trains can be built using leftover pieces of wood from previous projects.

Common materials include:

  • pine

  • maple

  • poplar

  • scrap hardwood offcuts

Small wooden dowels are typically used for the axles and connectors between train cars.

Wooden toy wheels can be purchased or cut from scrap wood using a hole saw.

Basic Tools Needed

This project requires only a few simple woodworking tools:

  • hand saw or band saw

  • drill or drill press

  • sandpaper

  • wood glue

Optional tools like a belt sander or spindle sander
can help shape the pieces more quickly, but they are not necessary.

Basic Steps To Build A Wooden Toy Train

Most beginner toy trains follow a simple building process.

1. Cut The Train Body

Start with small wooden blocks and cut the basic shapes for the engine and train cars.

2. Drill Axle Holes

Drill holes through the body pieces where the wheels will be attached.

3. Sand The Edges

Smooth all edges and corners so the toy is safe and comfortable for children to handle.

4. Install Wheels And Connect Cars

Insert dowels for the axles and attach the wheels.
Additional cars can be connected using small wooden pegs or string.

Safety Tip For Children’s Toys

If the toy is intended for children, always make sure to:

✔ sand all edges smooth
✔ remove any sharp corners
✔ use non-toxic finishes

Food-safe mineral oil or beeswax are excellent finishes for wooden toys.
